World number one and favourite to win the 2019 ITTF World championship Fan Zhendong has been knocked out in 6 games by 22-year-old Liang Jingkun in Men’s Singles round of 16.
The Chinese Super star who defeated Nigeria and Africa’s number one player Aruna Quadri was no match for his younger compatriot on Thursday in Budapest.
Fan Zhendong who all his previous three games including the round of 32 tie against Aruna Quadri without dropping a game won the first game against Liang Jingkun but lost the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th games to put himself in a tight position.
He however, won the 5th game but lost in the 6th game ( 11-5, 4-11, 8-11, 9-11, 11-8, 7-11) for a 2-4 loss in the round of 16.
The 9th seeded Liang Jingkun will now face Japan’s Niwa Koki who defeated Puka Tomislav 4-2 in the round of 16.
Ma Long who defeated Brazil’s Calderano Hugo 4-2 will play compatriot Lin Gaoyuan who also defeated Korea’s Jeoung Youngsik 4-0.
Korea’s An Jaehyun who defeated Japan’s Harimoto Tomokazu 4-2 will play compatriot Jang Woojin who defeated former world number one Timo Boll 4-0.
The last quarterfinal fixture will see Sweden’s Falck Mattias go against France’s Gauzy Simon. Falck Mattias defeated Korea’s Lee Sangsu 4-1 and Gauzy Simon defeated Wang Yang 4-0.
The quarterfinal games will be played on Friday.
