Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz Garfia continued to progress at the 2022 US Open after a hard-fought victory over rival Jannik Sinner at Flushing Meadows. The young duo are quickly developing a rivalry with the level of tennis they deliver in their meetings.
19-year-old Alcaraz outlasted his 21-year-old opponent in a match that lasted for five hours and 15 minutes to reach the last four in New York. Having lost to Sinner at Wimbledon earlier this year, Alcaraz was intent upon exacting revenge against the Italian. He lost the first set before bouncing back in the second. The teenager won the third set too, showing elite composure to retain control in the following sets to claim a 3-6 7-6 7-6 5-7 6-3 win. The young Spaniard will feature in the semifinals of a grand Slam for the first time in his budding career.
After sensationally knocking out Rafael Nadal, Frances Tiafoe was not done yet as he defeated Russia’s Andrey Rublev to seal a place in the 2022 US Open semifinals. The 24-year-old American defeated his opponent in straight sets 7-6 7-6 6-4 to reach his maiden Grand Slam semifinal. He will face Spanish prodigy Carlos Alcaraz Garfia for a place in the final.
In the women’s draw, World number one Iga Swiatek continued her march towards a second major title of 2022 as she defeated Jessica Pegula in straight sets to reach the last four at the 2022 US Open. Swiatek picked up a 6-3 7-6 win over the eighth seeded Pegula to book her place in the semifinals in New York. She will face Aryna Sabalenka for a place in the final.
Aryna Sabalenka qualified for the semifinals of the US Open after a straight sets win over Karolina Pliskova. The sixth seed from Belarus played an impressive game to win 6-1 7-6 against her Czech opponent. Sabalenka will hope to defeat world number one Iga Swiatek in the semifinal.
