Wilfred Ndidi’s hamstring injury will not rule him out of Russia 2018

One of Super Eagles most important players, Wilfred Ndidi has suffered a hamstring injury while playing for Leicester City in their 5-0 loss to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

The 21-year-old is an important player for both Leicester City and Nigeria, that the news of his injury is a big concern for both his club manager, Claude Puel and Nigeria manager Gernot Rohr.

The box to box midfielder who leads in the tackles won in the Premier League this season will be greatly missed by Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup in Russia if he fails to make the cut due to his injury.

His absence was felt in Leicester City 5-0 loss to Crystal Palace, as confirmed by his manager Claude Puel during his post match conference.

“The red card was harsh. It was a battle between two players, both making contact. It happened during a crazy five minutes with the injury to Ndidi that left the team so imbalanced. We needed to react in the second half and this scenario made it impossible,” said Puel after the match.

Claude Puel also confirmed the injury type that Wilfred Ndidi suffered but was unsure of the degree as he hoped for him to play a part in the World Cup.

“I hope it is not a serious injury for Ndidi and I hope he can play in the World Cup, all the scenarios today were bad for us. We will see. It is a hamstring injury. I hope it is not serious of course because it is an important moment.”

It is 47 days to the start of World Cup, the average healing times for hamstring injuries are: (1) mild strain – 2 to 10 days, (2) moderate strain – 10 days to 6 weeks, (3) severe strain – 6 to 10 weeks.

As we await the news of the degree of his injury one would only hope that it is just a mild strain or a moderate strain because Wilfred Ndidi is one the players that help Nigeria’s course of becoming the first African country to win the World Cup.
