Barcelona second half blitz blows Athletic Bilbao away, earns them Copa del Rey title

Copa del Rey win Barcelona's first since 2018/19

FC Barcelona picked up the Copa del Rey title after a deserved 4-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in the final in Seville on Saturday. Barcelona scored all of their goals in 12 second half minutes as they stunned Athletic, who had defeated them in the Super Cup final into silence.

In a very important game, Barcelona were clearly the better side and Frenkie De Jong hit the upright with a shot in the first half, but the team failed to dazzle. It was not until the second half that they took complete charge and brutally ensured that Athletic Bilbao lost two Copa del Rey finals in the space of 3 weeks. Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring on the hour after he was teed up by Dutch midfielder, De Jong, before De Jong himself found the back of the net just three minutes later. Lionel Messi took centre stage afterwards, as he combined with De Jong to create a bit of room for himself in the box and caressed the ball into the far post. Messi scored another another in the 72nd minute to effectively end the tie.

Barcelona’s win means they have now won 92 titles since their inception, and this was their first title since 2018/19 after they went through last season trophyless. Messi has now scored 31 goals for the club this season, his 13th consecutive season of scoring 30+ club goals.
