Bassey grabs an assist as five Nigerian involved in UCL Matchday 1 – Three debutants

Three out of the five Nigerian players who were involved in the UEFA Champions League on matchday one were playing their first game in Europe’s biggest club competition.

The five Nigerian players in action today were: Victor Osimhen, Calvin Bassey, Zaidu Sanusi, Raphael Onyedika, and Fortune Akpan Bassey.

There out of the five players played in their first ever Champions League games and impressed. Here is the scoring card of the five players.

5. Fortune Akpan Bassey (Barcelona 5-1 Viktoria Plzen)

The 23-year-old forward was a second-half substitute for Viktoria Plzen who suffered a 5-1 defeat against Barcelona.

Fortune Akpan Bassey played for 24 minutes at Camp Nou. The game was Fortune’s first-ever game in the Champions League.

4. Raphael Onyedika (Club Brugge 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen)

The 21-year-old midfielder was impressive for the Belgian champions against Leverkusen. He was rock solid for Club Brugge who secured a 1-0 win on Wednesday.

Raphael Onyedika played for 83 minutes at Jan Breydel Stadion. The game was Onyedika’s first-ever game in the Champions League.

3. Zaidu Sanusi (Atletico 2-1 Porto)

The Super Eagles defender was on the pitch for 103 minutes as his Portuguese club FC Porto suffered a 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Zaidu Sanusi impressed for Porto against Atletico at the Civitas Metropolitano on Wednesday. He had more work today after his side was reduced to 10-man in the second half.

2. Victor Osimhen (Napoli 4-1 Liverpool)

Although he played for just 40 minutes before leaving through injury, Victor Osimhen was massive for Napoli in their 4-1 easy win against Liverpool.

Victor Osimhen won a penalty but missed his attempt. His all-around play was the reason Liverpool were out of rhythm. He was constantly too much for Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to handle.

Before he was subbed off Napoli were leading 2-0 and could have been 5-0 up had they scored their chances.

1. Calvin Bassey (Ajax 4-0 Rangers)

Back-to-back assist for Calvin Bassey as he helped his new side trash his old side. Bassey assisted one of the four goals scored as Ajax hammered Rangers 4-0 on Wednesday.

This is Calvin Bassey’s first-ever game in the Champions League.
