Cameroon, Senegal take step closer to FIFA Women World Cup with Intercontinental tickets

The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon and the Lionesses of Teranga of Senegal have both taken a step closer to fulfilling their dreams of playing at the 2023 FIFA Woemn’s World Cup.

After the Super Falcons of Nigeria, Atlass Lionesses of Morocco, Banyana Banyana of South Africa and Shepolopolo of Zambia booked their World Cup places with quarterfinal victories at the 2022 WAFCON.

The losing quarterfinalists, Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon, the Lionesses of Teranga of Senegal, the Mares of Botswana, and the Eagles of Carthage of Tunisia were given another chance at making the 2023 World Cup.

FIFA and CAF made provisions through playoffs, CAF organized playoff games between the losing quarterfinalists namely, Cameroon, Tunisia, Botswana and Senegal.

With Cameroon playing against Botswana while Senegal facing Tunisia. Cameroon defeated Botswana by a lone goal while Senegal secured a 4-2 penalty shootout win against Tunisia.

The two qualified nations Cameroon and Senegal will now partake in another organized competition by FIFA ‘the Intercontinental playoff’.

Ten teams will participate in the intercontinental playoffs with slots distribted as follow:

AFC (Asia): 2 slots (Thailand, Chinese Taipei)
CAF (Africa): 2 slots (Cameroon, Senegal)
CONCACAF (North America, Central America and the Caribbean): 2 slots (Panama, Haiti)
CONMEBOL (South America): 2 slots
OFC (Oceania): 1 slot
UEFA (Europe): 1 slot

Senegal, Cameroon, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, Panama, Haiti and four other qualifiers will play part in the intercontinetal playoff.

The ten participatin nations will be grouped into three with the country atop each group qualifying for the World Cup proper.

The competition will be played from 18 to 23 February in New Zealand at the Waikato Stadium in Hamilton and Auckland’s North Harbour Stadium.
