Ex-Akwa United striker seals multimillion dollar J-League transfer

Signed for a transfer fee in the region of $2 million

25 year old former Akwa United and Water FC striker, Gabriel Okechukwu has joined Japanese league outfit Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo from Moroccan outfit, Wydad AC in a four year deal reportedly worth up to $2 Million in transfer fees alone.

The Super Eagles international is fondly remembered for scoring the winning goal for Akwa United as they triumphed in the AITEO Cup in 2017. He’s also remembered for being one of the reasons given by the NFF for the sacking of former Super Eagles manager, the late Stephen Keshi. Keshi invited Okechukwu to the Super Eagles squad and handed him the number 10 shirt as a teenage non-league footballer playing for Water FC academy in 2015. Okechukwu went on to score the winning goal for the home based Super Eagles against Angola in the 2018 CHAN in Morocco.

His boyhood club, Water FC is known to have produced a good number of internationals, including Michael Babatunde who played at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and Success Makanjuola who represented the U-20 Eagles in the World Cup in 2019.
