Gary Neville makes England right back pick between Alexander-Arnold and Reece James

South Gates reveals why ref Jesus Gil Manzano gave Reece James a red card after the match

Manchester United and Three Lions great Gary Neville has made his right back pick between Chelsea’s Reece James and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Chelsea defender was handed his full England debut in the UEFA Nations League match between England and Denmark at Wembley on Wednesday.

Gareth Southgate’s choice of Reece James over Trent Alexander-Arnold surprised many but not Gary Neville who explained why the Chelsea man was favoured over the Liverpool star.

“He was arriving better down the right side than Trent was the other day vs Belgium,” said Neville after England were beaten 1-0 by Denmark.

“I can’t believe someone doesn’t get on the end of his crosses, I think for me he was probably England’s best player tonight for sure.”

While the Chelsea man dropped a man of the match performance in the clash he was also given a red card at the end of the match.

England manager was full of praise for the Chelsea youngester abd explained why he was given a red card by ref Jesus Gil Manzano.

“The referee says he’s sent him [Reece James] off for dissent, so of course that’s a lesson he has got to learn, he’s a young player,” said Gareth Southgate to Sky Sports.

“But I thought he had an incredible debut. He’s impressed me all week, until that moment he had shown great maturity.

“His quality of play – in the first half him and Mason [Mount] combined brilliantly with Kyle Walker.

“It has ended up something that shouldn’t have happened. But I think for the overall week he has made a really positive impression on us.”

Reece James have only played two games for the national team and this was just his first start.
