Gernot Rohr sets Quarterfinal Target for Super Eagles at Russia 2018
Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr is convinced Nigeria will better the second round tradition by reaching the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Nigeria have reached the second round of the tournament three times from its previous five outings and the German tactician is poised to make history by going a step further which will see Nigeria equaling the feats achieved by Cameroun in 1990, Senegal in 2002 and Ghana in 2006.
No African team has ever gone beyond final eight at the tournament. “We have set a target to reach the quarter-final of the World Cup and for this reason, we have taken only the best players who are fit and in good form.
We have a good programme going to Russia with series of friendly games that will put us in shape for the World Cup,” he said.
Rohr, who in January extended his for another two years, confirmed that the team would commence camping in Austria ahead of the tournament with 35 players stating there would be three players for each of the outfield positions with the exception of goalkeepers which would be four or five. He reiterates that there are vacant places to fill before his World Cup squad takes shape.
