Gritty Real Madrid hold Liverpool to scoreless draw at Anfield, qualify for Semis in UCL

Reds left to the missed chances against Real Madrid

After their first leg 3-1 win at the Estadio Alfredo di Stefano, perennial champions Real Madrid visited Anfield for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal against Liverpool. The game ended 0-0 as Liverpool crashed out of the competition at the hand of Spanish opposition for a second consecutive season.

Liverpool came into the game knowing that they had it all to do after their lackluster first leg performance and they took the game to their visitors from the first blast of the whistle. Mohamed Salah should have scored twice in the first five minutes as he missed two glorious chances to put Real Madrid under serious pressure. The away side were happy to repel Liverpool attacks for the entirety of the game, showing a balanced side that saw them neither create nor give away too many chances. Liverpool were left frustrated at their inability to find the back of the net in the game as it ended 0-0.

Liverpool have now lost out on all four trophies this season, and Real Madrid are now firm favourites to win a 14th title. They will face Chelsea over two legs in a sensational match for Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois, both of whom played for the London club before moving over to Madrid.
