Italy, Denmark breeze through to Euro 2020 last 8

Wales, Austria crash out at Round of 16

Denmark overcame the challenge of the Welsh national team at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam, winning 4-0 to eliminate the Gareth Bale-led side and progress to the quarterfinals of the tournament. They were joined in the last eight by Italy, after the Azzurri overcame a spirited Austrian side 2-1 at Wembley Stadium in extra time to qualify for the quarterfinals.

OGC Nice striker Kasper Dolberg opened the scoring with a fierce shot from outside the area in the 27th minute before capitalising on a defensive mixup just three minutes into the second half to double their lead. Left wing back Joakim Maehle added a third after 88 minutes,  and Barcelona striker Martin Braithwaite added a fourth in added time to seal a superb win for the Danes. Wales midfielder Harry Wilson was controversially sent off for Wales. Denmark will now face the winner of the game between Netherlands and the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals.

Italy and Austria mostly neutralised each other throughout the 90 minutes of the game, but Austria thought they had stolen the win late on when Marko Arnautovic put the ball into the back of the net, only for the VAR to intervene and disallow the goal for a slight offside decision. Italy eventually took the lead through Juventus winger Federico Chiesa in the 95th minute before Matteo Pessina scored for the second game running to double their advantage in the 105th minute. Sasa Kalajdzic scored a late consolation strike for Austria, becoming the first player to breach the Italian rearguard in over 1100 minutes of football. Italy will now face the winners of the Round of 16 tie between Belgium and Portugal in the quarterfinals of the competition.
