Lewandowski shatters 49-year-old Bundesliga scoring record

Helps Bayern Munich to 5-2 win on last day of season

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski scored in the 90th minute as he broke Gerd Muller’s record of 40 goals in a single Bundesliga season in Bayern Munich’s 5-2 drubbing of Augsburg on the last day of the season.

Bayern Munich raced into the lead through a Jeffrey Gouweleew own goal in the 9th minute, before Serge Gnabry, Joshua Kimmich and Kingsley Coman scored to put the Bavarian giants 4-0 up before halftime. After the break, Andre Hahn and Florian Niederlechner scored for Augsburg before goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz spilled a fierce Leroy Sane shot into the path of Lewandowski and the striker duly obliged after the keeper had saved six of his shots in the game.

Lewandowski took only 29 matches to score all 41 of his goals as he helped Bayern Munich to win the Bundesliga for a 9th consecutive season. The Polish striker has now successfully broken the Bundesliga scoring record of 40 goals set by Gerd Muller in the 1971/72 season.
