Liverpool hits 129 year low as Mason Mount strike condemns them to 5th consecutive home defeat

Liverpool faced Chelsea at Anfield in their Matchday 26 encounter of the English Premier League looking to turn their season around with a good performance. It was however the visitors that picked up all three points with a 1-0 win.

Liverpool started the game with a high intensity as their forward players and fullbacks pressed high, forcing the Chelsea backline go long and turn over possession quickly. This tactic almost favoured Chelsea in the 24th minute when a long ball from Jorginho set Timo Werner free to tuck the ball into the back of the net, only for VAR to rule the goal out for offside by the tightest of margins. Chelsea eventually took the lead as N’Golo Kante played out a brilliant long pass over the top for Mason Mount, who cut into his favoured right foot and bent in a fine effort that nestled in the bottom left corner of the Liverpool goal. Chelsea took complete control of the game, only conceding a shot on target in the 85th minute of the game as they went on to grind out a comfortable 1-0 win. The win was Chelsea’s first in 5 games against Liverpool, and their first at Anfield since 2014.

Thomas Tuchel has now gone 10 matches unbeaten since his appointment as Chelsea manager, conceding only two goals in that time. The result puts Chelsea into the top four on 47 points, while Liverpool are further behind on 43 points. Liverpool have now lost 5 consecutive home games for the first time in the club’s history, only scoring one goal, a penalty, from 85 shots in those games.
