Messi becomes a free agent after Barcelona contract expires

Argentine legend's future uncertain

Lionel Messi has not signed a new contract with FC Barcelona, and his current contract has expired on June 30th, the official end of the 2020/21 season.

Messi has had offers from Barcelona as reported by the president Joan Laporta, but he is yet to come to an agreement with the club on his future. The club was hoping that the signing of Sergio Aguero, Messi’s close friend and compatriot, would spur the club captain to renew his contract, but it seems he is only focused on the Copa America with the Argentine national team. The 34-year-old holds all of the major records at FC Barcelona and has played there all through his professional career. He was however noticeably absent from the FC Barcelona kit launch for the 2021/22 season.

It should be recalled that Messi tried to force an exit from the club last summer, citing the dishonesty and unfaithfulness of former President Bartomeu as an important factor. There would be a lot of suitors for Messi if he decides to leave the club, and the drama is set to unfold in the coming days and weeks.
