NPFL Match Day 14 Review: Away win for Pillars in Akure, Ikorudu FC back to winning ways

It was another entertaining week of football in the NPFL as Kano Pillars got an unlikely away victory in Akure over Sunshine Stars, Ikorudu FC recorded their first victory in 12 NPFL games, Enyimba dropped points at home, and league leaders Enugu Rangers were thoroughly beaten by Rivers United in Portharcourt.

The week 14 NPFL games started on Saturday as the two Lagos based teams defeated their opponents to take the maximum points with ease.

Sikiru Olatunbosun’s brace and Stephen Odey’s 67th minutes strike gave MFM FC a resounding 3-0 victory over Akwa United at the Agege Township Stadium.

The second tie involving the other Lagos based club produced 4 goals as the home team Ikorodu FC secured their first win in 12 games. Anthony Oussou noded the away team ahead on the 10th minutes of the game but Merenini Junior equalized for Ikorudu just before the end of the first half.

Ebiye put the home team ahead in the 65th minutes before Ojukwu Ifegwu put the game beyond Heartland when he converted from the spot to make 3-1 for the home team.

At the Akure Township Stadium, Adamu Mohammed settled the contest in the 82nd minute, stunning the home fans to hand Pillars a rare 1-0 win away over Sunshine, the win move Pillars to second on the log.

At the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers United dealt a big blow to Rangers in their bid to win their first league title in 32 years when they beat them 3-1.

Bernard Ovoke got Rivers United in front in the 17th minute from the spot, before Christian Weli doubled the advantage in the 21st minute. Ovoke got his brace just before half time. Rangers  kept their place on top of the table, despite the defeat

The visitors rallied back in the second half, and for an early lifeline in the 47th minute, when Gabriel Olalekan turned the ball into his own net. Rangers poured forward in search of goals but lost out despite dominating possession, with Chisom Egbuchulam and John Aguda wasting credible opportunities late on.

At the Umuahia Township Stadium, Enyimba FC failed to secure a win at home, as they had to force Lobi Stars to an entertaining 2-2 draw at the .

The champions took the lead through Abu Azeez in the 28th minute. Nanen Imenger levelled terms for the visitors in the 44th minute. Solomon Kwambe sprung Lobi to the lead, seven minutes after the start of the second half. Enyimba grabbed a late equalizer in the 85th minute, when Chinedu Udoji headed home Nzube Anaezemba’s corner kick.

At the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, Ibeh Johnson’s late equalizer shared the spoils between Shooting Stars and Plateau United.

Wasiu Jimoh blew an opportunity to put his side in charge, when he dragged his shot off target from the spot, after an opposing defender had handled the ball inside the area.
Plateau United took the lead in the 27th minute through Joshua Obaje, before Tope Orelope levelled from a penalty five minutes later. Wasiu Jimoh put the home side ahead in the 37th minute, before Ibeh stunned in the equalizer almost at the death.

Bolaji Adeyemo broke the deadlock at the Confluence Stadium, Lokoja, as Niger Tornadoes defeated El-Kanemi Warriors by a lone goal.

Elsewhere Esosa Igbinoba’s double secured maximum points for Nasarawa United at the expense of visiting Warri Wolves.

The Oriental Derby between FC Ifeanyiubah and Abia Warriors ended barren.
