Poor finishing deny Mikel’s Middlesbrough the win against Wigan

Middlesbrough were denied the chance to secure another league win on Saturday by their strikers.

“If you’ve got an open goal twice and you can’t hit the target on two occasions, then you’re going to come away disappointed,” were the words of Tony Pullis as Middlesbrough played out a goalless draw in their championship game against Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium on Saturday.

It was not the best of games for Middlesbrough but again Mikel Obi was a reliable presence on the pitch. When the home side had the ball for the first few minutes of the game, Mikel and co kept their cool before regaining possession and finding their feet.

The striking duo of Ashley Fletcher and Britt Assombalonga were unable to convert chances that would have made it three wins on the bounce for Boro.

Middlesbrough were the better side of the two for the most part of the game after overcoming the initial pressure from Wigan but they failed to make their possession count and missed out on the chance to boost their promotion credentials.

Mikel Obi was again on the pitch for the entire duration of the game and got his job done but the strikers who failed to score open goals denied him another win Middlesbrough’s colours.

The draw now puts in 58 points and 4 points better than 6th placed Bristol City.
