Schweinsteiger scores on Chicago Fire debut

It was a memorable MLS bow for Bastian Schweinsteiger, who scored after 17 minutes of his Chicago Fire debut in a 2-2 draw with Montreal Impact at Toyota Park.

The 32-year-old netted with a powerful header at the far post, converting David Accam’s cross to give the home side a 1-0 lead over their visitors.

Schweinsteiger only arrived at his new club on March 21 after a disappointing spell as a Manchester United player, and he was unveiled just three days before being given his first start by coach Veljko Paunovic.

The World Cup winner’s opener set the tone for a dramatic affair – Impact equalising through Matteo Mancosu before Fire’s Juninho saw red for a second caution.

The numbers were evened up when Victor Cabrera was dismissed for denying a goalscoring opportunity and Impact looked to have won it through Ballou Jean-Yves Tabla in the 90th minute, only for Luis Solignac to rescue a point for Schweinsteiger and his new team-mates deep into stoppage time.
