Team Nigeria claims gold in women’s 4x100m at African Athletics Championship

Nigerian women deliver brilliant performance in Mauritius

Team Nigeria’s four-woman team to the African Athletics Championship have emerged with a brilliant gold medal against all odds as the Nigerian contingent picked up its third gold medal in the competition.

With the Nigerian contingent already having secured two gold medals, the 4x100m women’s team snuck into the final of the event by picking up the last qualifying place in the semi-final. Led by the experienced Tobi Amusan, the team went on to achieve the impossible on the track in Mauritius.

Praise Idamadudu started the race in the first leg for the Nigerians but found herself in fourth place by the time the baton was handed to Tima Godbless, who managed to hold onto her position in the straight leg before handing the baton to Praise Ofoku, who took advantage of the bend on the track to put the Nigerian team in a commanding lead before passing the baton to the anchor Amusan who consolidated the lead as the team finished in a time of 44.45 seconds ahead of South Africa and the Gambia in second and third place, respectively.

It was Amusan’s second gold medal at the competition, having won gold in the women’s 100m hurdles a day earlier. Along with Idamadudu, Godbless and Ofoku, the Commonwealth champion won the Nigerian women their 11th gold medal in the women’s 4x100m in the African Athletics Championship.
