Tightrope walk for Emmanuel Amunike as he bid to qualify Tanzania for first AFCON in 39 years

Emmanuel Amunike will have to go on a mission impossible to qualify the Tanzania national team for the 2019 African Nations Cup.

With a game to go in the last qualifying series, Emmanuel Amunike and Tanzania must beat Uganda in Dar es Salaam and expect a favour from Cape Verde for them to qualify for the 2019 AFCON.

After 5 round of games, Uganda have already qualified with 13 points while Lesotho and Tanzania on equal points occupy the second and third positions respectively with Cape Verde on the last spot.

  1. Uganda 5 4 1 0 7 0 +7 13
  2. Lesotho 5 1 2 2 3 7 -4 5
  3. Tanzania 5 1 2 2 3 5 -2 5
  4. Cape Verde 5 1 1 3 4 5 -1 4

Since CAF puts points in head-to-head matches among tied teams first in determining the winner in a tie breaker, should both Tanzania and Lesotho win their games it is Lesotho who go through on head to head regardless of the number of goals Tanzania score against Uganda because they have their head to head advantage.

The Head-to-head points: Lesotho 4, Tanzania 1. Lesotho played a 1-1 draw against Tanzania at the National Stadium, Dar es Salaam then won 1-0 at the Setsoto Stadium, Maseru.

For Emmanuel Amunike to qualify Tanzania for AFCON for the first time in 39 years his team must first beat Uganda who are yet to concede a goal in five games and hope that Lesotho fail to win at Cape Verde.

The last round games will be played on March 24th, 2019.
