Tobi Amusan flies Nigerian flag, sets new African record at World Championships

Ese Brume, Ruth Usoro through to long jump finals

Tobi Amusan continued with her impressive season as she blazed to a new African record at the 2022 World Athletics Championship in Oregon. The Diamond League champion won her 100m hurdles heat with the fastest time in the history of the World Athletics Championship.

Having seen the other members of Team Nigeria return underwhelming performances in Oregon, Tobi Amusan was one of the last medal hopes for the Nigerians. The two-time Olympian lived up to the billing with a terrific performance on the track to reach the final.

Amusan was pitted against some of the best in Heat 3 of the women’s 100m hurdles and she sped away from the chasing pack to finish the race in a time of 12.40s, beating her own African record of 12.41s. She also set a record for the fastest time ever run in a 100m hurdles heat in a global event. She ran the fastest time in any of the heats at the event and will meet the likes of Brittany Anderson, Alia Armstrong and Jasmine Camacho-Quinn in the final.

Ese Brume delivered a big leap to reach the final of the women’s long jump alongside fellow Nigerian star Ruth Usoro. The Olympic medalist was in 13th place and on the verge of missing out on a place in the final, but her final jump of 6.82m was enough to get her a spot in the final. Usoro reached the final with a leap of 6.69m to give Nigeria two representatives in Sunday’s final.
