Villarreal stun Bayern Munich in UEFA Champions League Quarterfinal first leg

Europa League champions claim shock win over German champions

Reigning Europa League champions Villarreal picked up a shock 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in their UEFA Champions League Quarterfinal first leg clash at the Estadio de la Ceramica.

Villarreal qualified for the Champions League Quarterfinal after a comprehensive 3-0 thrashing of Juventus in Italy, and they were up against Bayern Munich, who thrashed RB Salzburg in the Round of 16.

Villarreal came into the game and raced into an early lead in the 8th minute of the clash. After some brilliant play from Gérard Moreno and on-loan midfielder Giovanni Lo Celso on the wing, Dani Parejo saw his shot turned in from close range by Lagos-born Arnaut Danjuma, who scored his sixth goal in the Champions League this season.

Former Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin managed to find the net with a cross-shot in the first half, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Villarreal had a number of chances to add to their advantage but were thwarted by a combination of poor finishing and impressive defending. Spanish forward Moreno saw an effort from halfway line narrowly swerve wide of an open goal, and he also saw a shot cannon back off the upright. Alfonso Pedraza was also guilty of blazing an effort wide of the upright.

Super Eagles star Samuel Chukwueze was introduced off the bench in the second half as he helped the Yellow Submarine to close out the win. Villarreal are the first side to keep a clean sheet against Bayern Munich in over 100 games.

Bayern Munich have a home match to look forward to against Villarreal in their UEFA Champions League Quarterfinal second leg as they look to make the semifinals of the competition.
