Wawrinka bows out on Day Three as Djokovic, Osaka, Kyrgios progress

Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka was sent packing from the 2021 Australian Open in the second round after losing in 5 sets to Hungarian Marton Fucsovics 5-7 1-6 6-4 6-2 6-7. He blamed his loss on his lack of fitness and sharpness after being quarantined for two weeks in Australia.

Germany’s Alexander Zverev defeated American Maxime Cressy in straight sets 7-5 6-4 6-3 to book his place in the third round of the competition.

Australia’s Nick Kyrgios defeated Ugo Humbert in a tough 5 set match 5-7 6-4 3-6 7-6 6-4 to qualify for the next round. Kyrgios has already courted controversy when he criticised world number one, Novak Djokovic.

Austrian world number three, Dominic Thiem defeated Dominik Koepfer 6-4 6-0 6-2 in straight sets to book his third round place in the tournament.

Novak Djokovic booked his spot in the third round of the competition when he defeated Frances Tiafoe 6-3 6-7 7-6 6-3 for his 16th consecutive victory in the Australian Open.

In the women’s event, Naomi Osaka defeated Caroline Garcia 6-2 6-3 to set up her third round place.

Teenage sensation, Iga Swiatek knocked out Camila Giorgi in straight sets, winning 6-2 6-4 to book her third round place.

Spanish world number 14, Garbine Muguruza beat Ludmilla Samsonova 6-3 6-1 to qualify for the third round.

Romania’s Simona Halep defeated Ajila Tomljanovic 4-6 6-4 7-5 to qualify for the third round of the competition.
