Wimbledon 2016: Women´s singles stat pack

Ahead of the start of Wimbledon on Monday, we take a look at some Opta facts relating to the women’s singles at SW19.

– Eleven of the last 16 editions of Wimbledon have been won by one of the Williams sisters (Serena 6, Venus 5).

– In the Open Era, only Martina Navratilova (9) & Steffi Graf (7) have won more women’s Wimbledon titles than Serena.

– Serena’s first Wimbledon title came in 2002, while her most recent success came last year when she beat the new French Open champion, Garbine Muguruza.

– The Williams sisters and two-time champion Petra Kvitova are the only former champions in this year’s field.

– Serena has not won any of the last three grand slams, after winning each of the previous four. Her last run of four slams without picking up a title spanned the period between Wimbledon in 2011 and the 2012 French Open.

– Five of Venus’ seven grand slam triumphs have come at Wimbledon, although her last title was back in 2008.

– Eight of the last nine finals have been played out over two sets. The only exception being Serena’s win over Agnieszka Radwanska in 2012.

– Following Flavia Pennetta’s win in the US Open in 2015, Angelique Kerber’s victory at the 2016 Australian Open and Muguruza’s success at Roland Garros, there have been three successive European winners of women’s grand slams. The last time there was a longer run was between the 2005 and 2006 US Opens (Kim Clijsters, Amelie Mauresmo, Justine Henin, Mauresmo, Maria Sharapova).
