Aruna Quadri’s conqueror Ma Long wins table tennis gold medal to complete career grand slam

Ma Long became just the fifth man to complete a career grand slam in table tennis, winning gold at the Rio Olympics on Thursday.

The 27-year-old from China beat countryman Zhang Jike 14-12 11-5 11-4 11-4 in the decider to complete the slam – which includes the world championships and world cup.

Zhang’s silver meant China have claimed the top two spots on the podium in this event at each of the past three Games.

“I am very glad not only to complete the grand slam, but to become Olympic champion alone makes me happy – I didn’t stress too much during the game. I did my best and played free,” Ma said.

“I’m extremely happy that I could win the gold medal, it’s a special moment in my career.”

The bronze went the way of Jun Mizutani, who became the first male Japanese player to win a table tennis medal.
