Yakubu Aiyegbeni: I was 100% better than other Nigerian strikers in my time

Yakubu Aiyegbeni has said he was a ruler taller than every other Nigerian strikers during his time in the Super Eagles set up.

Despite playing in the era that had strikers like Obafemi Martins, Peter Odemwingie, Ike Uche, John Utaka and the likes; Yakubu Aiyegbeni said they were nowhere as good as he was.

The retired striker while speaking via telephone on Lagos Talks’ Sports Zone said the confident he had in his abilities was misjudged as arrogance.

Aiyegbeni who is famous amongst Nigerian football lovers ‘as the man who missed the goal they would never be able to explain to their kids’ said he was 100% better than the other strikers of his era.

“I know people often said I was arrogant when I was in the Super Eagles, but that isn’t true.

“I just knew that I was better than the other strikers. One hundred per cent.”

Yakubu Aiyegbeni scored a total of 21 goals in 57 games to end his career as Nigeria’s third-highest scorer just behind Rashidi Yekini and Segun Odegbami.

Who would you pick between Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Obafemi Martins, Peter Utaka, Ike Uche, Peter Odemwingie?

There was nothing special about you
You were only doing what an average striker can do, yet as at then you were at your prime
Why not stop boasting and talk about the goal you missed that your children children won’t forget
Obafemi Martins was far better than you, and would’ve done more if he had the playing time you had

The records are there to back up his claim… He has the third highest goal for Nigeria…. meaning that he scored more goals than Martins, Aghahowa, Agali and even Kanu.

In the premier league, he’s the first and only African to score 4 goal in the same match, First Nigerian to score a champion’s league HATRICK..

He won a rare recommendation from Sir Alex when the coach recommended him for Harry Recknap at Portsmouth.

He made history with Macaibi Haifa… Check the records

Aiyegbeni is a Legend… Respect him

Osaze Odemwiegie. He was good but wasn’t disciplined. He was rude. We remember when he, victor Agali and Babayaro was sent packing from Afcon for partying in a hotel in 2004 after loosing our first match against Morroco. He was never serious. He never maximised his potentials, and couldn’t work on his weight. This was why he never played for an elite club. Nigerians will always prefer Odemwiegie to any other.
