2008 Olympic heroes Ajilore and Nsofor express disappointment over unfulfilled government promises
Former Nigerian national football team stars Oluwafemi Ajilore and Victor Obinna Nsofor have voiced their disappointment over unfulfilled promises made by the Nigerian government following their 2008 Olympic games silver-medal win.
The Nigerian Dream Team, led by Ajilore and Nsofor, reached the final of the tournament in Beijing, China, only to be defeated by an Argentina team boasting football stars like Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, and Angel Di Maria.
Despite securing a bittersweet silver medal, the promises made to the team by the government have yet to be fulfilled.
As preparations hit top-gear for the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, a throwback video showcasing one of Nigeria’s proudest moments from the 2008 Olympics served as reminder for the 2008 Dream team set.
The video captured a sensational team goal scored by Nsofor.
In their reaction to the video, both players queried the Nigerian Government for failing to deliver as promised.
Reacting to the video, Ajilore expressed his frustration via the Instagram account @femfemo: “Where are promises and national honour promises for us? Someone should help and remind the FG. It’s not too late,” he commented.
Similarly, Nsofor lamented the history of unfulfilled promises with a poignant remark, emphasizing the ongoing issue of neglect by the government.
“No be today my brother, promise promise but never redeemed,” @victorobinna_official replied.
The recurring stories of unfulfilled promises has been criticised by sportsmen and women who have brought honor to the nation through their talents and hard work.
The grievances aired by Ajilore and Nsofor serve as a call to action for the Nigerian government and sports authorities.
Recently, the Nigerian Government pledged to reward Super Eagles player with flats and lands in Abuja for their silver medal win at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.
