2022 Commonwealth Games: Tobi Amusan fires Nigerian ladies to African Record in 4×100m Relay

Team Nigeria continued their impressive performance on the track at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham as they performed brilliantly in the relays, claiming a gold and bronze medal.

In the women’s 4x100m relay, 100mh world record and Commonwealth record holder Tobi Amusan was drafted into the team that qualified for the final to replace Joy Udo-Gabriel in a bid to improve the team’s time. The 25-year-old started the race for her team before handing the baton over to the 19-year-old 200m silver medalist Favour Ofili. Ofili ran brilliantly before handing the baton to Rosemary Chukwuma who opened up an impressive lead before giving the baton to Grace Nwokocha, who was the anchor. The team completed the race in 42.10s, an African record, to win gold ahead of Jamaica.

In the men’s 4x100m, 19-year-old Udodi Onwuzuruike was added to the team, just as Amusan was added to the women’s team. The teenager started the race before handing the baton to Favour Ashe on the bend. The sprinter then passed the baton to Alaba Akintola, who managed to keep up with the top runners before handing over to Raymond Ekevwo, the team’s anchor. The men’s team completed the race in 38.81s to finish with the bronze medal behind England and Trinidad & Tobago.
