Spain completes Group E of the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup which gets underway in 14 days from today.
On our World Cup countdown today, we will review Spain’s World Cup history, World Cup squad and chances ahead of the November 20, World Cup kick-off date.
SPAIN AT THE FIFA WORLD CUP: APPEARANCE:
Spain will be making their 16th FIFA World Cup appearance in Qatar.
Their first appearance was in 1934.
BEST FINISH
Spain reached their first ever FIFA World Cup final in 2010.
On that day in South Africa, Andreas Iniesta scored in extra-time for a 1-0 win over Netherlands .
Spain’s first and only World Cup title.
WORST FINISH
Spain have exited the FIFA World Cup at the Group stage on five occasions.
We rank their 2014 World Cup run as their worst because Spain arrived Brazil for the World Cup as defending Champions but we’re humbled out in the Group stage.
Netherlands set the tone for their Sorry run bashing the Spaniards 5-1 in the opening group game.
Chile compounded their woes in a 2-0 win that made Spain’s 3-0 victory over Australia in the last group game a mere formality.
HEAVIEST DEFEAT
Brazil 6-1 Spain at the 1954 World Cup.
BIGGEST WIN
Spain 6-1 Bulgaria at the 1998 World Cup in France.
MOST WORLD CAP APPEARANCES/CAPS
Real Madrid legends Goalkepeer Iker Casillas and defender Sergio Ramos are level on 17 FIFA World Cup caps and have appeared at four World Cups.
WORLD CUP TOP GOAL SCORER
David Villa scored 9 goals at three FIFA World Cup tournaments to lead Spain’s World Cup goal-chart.
Villa scored 5 times to help Spain to the title in 2010 where he also scooped the tournaments top scorer award.
SPAIN’S CHANCES AT THE 2022 FIFA WORLD CUP
Naturally, Spain will always be on the list of top five favorites heading to the World Cup.
But in a group that includes Germany, Japan and Costa Rica, Luis Enrique’s men would have solid competition for a place in the Knock-out round.
Spain are yet to name their final 26-man squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup but whatsoever is on Luis Enrique’s cards will certainly accommodate experienced skipper Sergio Busquets to charge a relatively young Spanish generation that includes golden boy Gavi.
Spain will begin their World Cup vs Costa Rica before facing European powerhouse Germany in the second leg. Japan will be Spain’s last group game on December 1, 2022.
The 2022 FIFA World Cup will take to place in Qatar from November 20 to December 18, 2022.
