2022 French Open Day One: Jabeur, Thiem, Muguruza make first round exits at Roland Garros

Alcaraz, Gauff, Fernandez book second round ticket

The 2022 French Open started with a great deal of action on the first day of the competition. Here are a few of the results from Day One of the 2022 French Open.

One-time Grand Slam champion Dominic Thiem continued his struggles since returning from a wrist injury in 2021 as he lost in straight sets to unseeded Bolivian Hugo Dellien 6-3 6-2 6-4, knocking him out of the 2022 French Open at the first round. It was his 11th consecutive defeat in the past two years.

World number six and teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz Garfia claimed a straight sets win over unseeded Argentine Juan Ignacio Londero 6-2 6-4 6-0 to book his place in the second round of the 2022 French Open.

German World number three Alexander Zverev claimed a 6-2 6-4 6-4 straight sets win over unseeded Sebastian Ofner to book his place in the second round of the competition.

Ninth-seed Felix Auger-Aliassime survived a scare in the first round against unseeded Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas to come back from two sets down and win 2-6 2-6 6-1 6-3 6-3 and book his place in the second round of the competition.

Unseeded Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor stunned Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina after coming from a set down to win 2-6 6-0 6-4 6-3 and qualify for the second round of the French Open.

In the women’s draw, Tunisian World number six Ons Jabeur suffered a shock exit from the competition at the hands of the unseeded Magda Linette, losing 6-3 6-7 5-7 in the first round of the competition.

Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi stunned 10th seed Garbine Muguruza 2-6 6-3 6-4 to send her packing from the French Open and book her place in the second round of the competition.

Coco Gauff booked her place in the second round after a 7-5 6-0 win over Rebecca Marino in their first round meeting.

Leylah Fernandez advanced to the second round after a 6-0 7-5 win over Kristina Mladenovic in the first round of the 2022 French Open.

Fourth-seed Maria Sakkari defeated Clara Burel 6-2 6-3 to book her place in the second round of the competition.
