2022 US Open Day 1: Medvedev, Murray, Gauff, Jabeur stroll through

Halep stunned by qualifier in first round

The 2022 US Open commenced with many of the sport’s top-ranked players taking to the court on Day One of action.

Reigning champion and world number one Daniil Medvedev barely broke sweat as he ran out with a straight sets win over unseeded Stefan Kozlov. The Russian claimed a 6-2 6-4 6-0 win over his counterpart from the USA to book his place in the second round of the competition.

Former world number one and US Open champion Andy Murray opened up his account at Flushing Meadows with a straight sets win over Francisco Cerundolo. The 35-year-old Murray claimed a 7-5 6-3 6-3 win to secure his second round passage.

Fifth seed Casper Ruud booked his place in round two at the 2022 US Open following a straight sets win over Kyle Edmund. The Norwegian picked up a 6-3 7-5 6-2 win over his British opponent to qualify for the second round.

Sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime needed four sets to dispatch Alexander Ritschard in their Round one encounter at Flushing Meadows. Auger-Aliassime claimed a 6-3 6-4 3-6 6-3 win to qualify for the second round.

Tenth seed Taylor Fritz was stunned in his round one clash with unseeded countryman Brandon Holt. Holt came back from a set down to claim a 6-7 7-6 6-3 6-4 win and send Fritz crashing out of the tournament.

In the women’s draw, 18-year-old prodigy and French Open finalist Coco Gauff began her 2022 US Open action with a straight sets win over Leolia Jeanjean. Gauff claimed a 6-2 6-3 win over her French opponent to progress to the second round.

Second seed Anett Kontaveit defeated unseeded Jacqueline Cristian in their first round meeting at the 2022 US Open. The Estonian claimed a 6-3 6-0 win to sail into the second round of the tournament.

Fifth seed Ons Jabeur defeated Madison Brengle in straight sets in their first round clash. The Tunisian claimed a 7-5 6-2 win over her American opponent to qualify for the second round.

Third seed Maria Sakkari claimed a three-set win over Wimbledon semi-finalist Tatjana Maria. Sakkari defeated her German adversary 6-4 3-6 6-0 to progress to the second round in New York.

Seventh seed Simona Halep was at the receiving end of a shock result as unseeded Ukrainian Daria Snigur claimed a win in their meeting. Snigur won their match in three sets 6-2 0-6 6-4 to progress to the second round.
