2022 US Open Day 2: Serena Williams cruises through, Tsitsipas stunned
Swiatek, Kyrgios, Alcaraz all through to second round
On Day 2 of the 2022 US Open, there were a number of shock results.
In the men’s draw, fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas was sent packing from the first round by unseeded Daniel Elahi Galan. Tsitsipas was one of the favourites to make it to the latter stages of the competition, only for him to fall at the first hurdle in four sets against his Colombian opponent. Galan claimed a 6-0 6-1 3-6 7-5 win to progress to the second round in New York.
Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios defeated fellow Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis in their 2022 US Open first round encounter to progress to the second round. The 23rd seed claimed a straight sets 6-3 6-4 7-6 win over Kokkinakis.
19-year-old third seed Carlos Alcaraz Garfia was pushed hard by unseeded Argentine Sebastian Baez before an injury in the third set forced Baez to retire from their match. Alcaraz ended up claiming a 7-5 7-5 2-0 win, having been in the lead in the third set.
Seventh seed Cameron Norrie hardly broke sweat as he claimed a straight sets victory over Benoit Paire in their 2022 US Open first round meeting. Norrie defeated the Frenchman 6-0 7-6 6-0 to progress in the competition.
Eighth seed Hubert Hurkacz claimed a straight sets win over Oscar Otte to qualify for the second round at Flushing Meadows. The Pole won the match 6-4 6-2 6-4 to overcome his unseeded opponent.
In the women’s draw, Serena Williams showed off her vintage self in what could well be her final appearance at Flushing Meadows. The 23-time Grand Slam winner cruised through the first round with a 6-3 6-3 win over Danka Kovinic in their first round encounter in New York. She will face second seed Anett Kontaveit in the second round of the competition.
World number one Iga Swiatek began her campaign at the 2022 US Open with a straight sets win over Jasmine Paolini in their first round meeting. Swiatek claimed a 6-3 6-0 win over her Italian opponent.
Eighth seed Jessica Pegula secured her place in round two with a straight sets win over Viktorija Golubic in their meeting. Pegula claimed a 6-2 6-2 win to progress in the competition.
Fourth seed Paula Badosa had to come back from a set down to defeat unseeded Lesia Tsurenko in their first round match in New York. Badosa claimed a 3-6 7-6 6-3 win to qualify for the second round.
2021 finalist Leylah Fernandez cruised past Oceane Dodin in straight sets to reach round two of the 2022 US Open. The 19-year-old 14th seed picked up a 6-3 6-4 win over her French opponent.
