2022 US Open Day 4: Serena storms third round as Medvedev, Alcaraz also progress

Swiatek, Norrie book slot in next round

Serena Williams served the world a timely reminder of her quality with a vintage performance in Round two of the 2022 US Open against world number two Anett Kontaveit. The 23-time Grand Slam winner needed three sets to dispatch Kontaveit in the first-ever meeting between the pair, winning 7-6 2-6 6-2 to progress to the third round in New York.

2021 US Open finalist Leylah Annie Fernandez was sent crashing out of the competition after losing to Ludmilla Samsonova in straight sets in their second round encounter. The 19-year-old lost the match 3-6 6-7 to end her hopes of going one better than last year.

World number one Iga Swiatek defeated Sloane Stephens in straight sets to progress to the third round at Flushing Meadows. The Pole claimed a 6-3 6-2 win over her American opponent.

Petra Martic stunned fourth seed Paula Badosa in front of the crowd at the 2022 US Open, winning in three sets against the Spaniard. Martic lost the first set before returning to win 6-7 6-1 6-2.

Eighth seed Jessica Pegula claimed a straight sets win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich in their second round meeting at Flushing Meadows. The American won the match 6-4 6-4 to reach the third round of the tournament.

In the men’s draw, reigning champion Daniil Medvedev is still yet to drop a set as he claimed a straight sets win over Arthur Rinderknech to progress to round three. Medvedev claimed a 6-2 7-5 6-3 win over the unseeded Frenchman to progress.

Third seed Carlos Alcaraz Garfia continued his progression with a straight sets win of his own. The 19-year-old defeated Federico Corla 6-2 6-1 7-5 to qualify for the third round of the 2022 US Open in New York.

Unseeded 20-year-old Brit Jack Draper stunned the tennis world as he knocked out Felix Auger-Aliassime in their second round meeting at Flushing Meadows. Draper claimed a 6-4 6-4 6-3 straight sets win to qualify for the third round.

Seventh seed Cameron Norrie qualified for the third round after a straight sets win over Joao Sousa. Norrie won the match 6-4 6-4 7-5 to progress.

Eighth seed Hubert Hurkacz was stunned by Ilya Ivashka in four sets in their second round meeting at the 2022 US Open. The Pole fell to a 4-6 6-4 6-7 3-6 defeat against his opponent.
