2022 US Open Day Three: Osaka, Raducanu, Sakkari crash out as Nadal struggles

Jabeur, Kyrgios, Murray all progress to next round

Former world number one Naomi Osaka continued her downward plunge in the WTA rankings as she lost in the first round at the 2022 US Open. The Japanese star fell in straight sets at the hands of Danielle Collins 6-7 3-6.

2021 champion Emma Raducanu will drop outside the top 80 in the world after she lost in straight sets in her first round match at the 2022 US Open. The Brit lost to veteran Alize Cornet 6-3 6-3 in straight sets to crash out of the tournament.

Third seed Maria Sakkari lost in the second round at Flushing Meadows as she fell to Wang Xiyu in three sets. The unseeded Wang claimed a 3-6 7-5 7-5 win to proceed to round three in New York.

Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur continued her march in the competition as she qualified for the third round. The Tunisian star defeated Elizabeth Mandlik 7-5 6-2 in straight sets to book her place in the third round.

Teenage sensation Coco Gauff progressed to the third round of the competition following a win over Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse. Gauff claimed a 6-2 7-6 win over her unseeded opponent.

In the men’s draw, Rafael Nadal showed no signs of the abdominal injury that forced him to retire from Wimbledon. The Spaniard, however, showed signs of distraction in the opening set before recovering well. His pregnant wife was hospitalised before the match which he won 4-6 6-2 6-3 6-3 against Rinky Hijikata to reach the second round.

Andy Murray reached the third round of a grand Slam for the first time since 2016 after he came back from a set down to defeat Emilio Nava. Murray claimed a 5-7 6-3 6-1 6-0 win over his opponent.

Nick Kyrgios defeated Benjamin Bonzi in four sets to reach the third round of the competition. The Australian claimed a 7-6 6-4 4-6 6-4 over his French opponent.

French Open finalist Casper Ruud needed four sets to defeat Tim van Rijthoven in their 2022 US Open clash. Ruud claimed a 6-7 6-4 6-4 6-4 win to progress to the third round.

Matteo Berrettini defeated Hugo Grenier to qualify for the third round of the competition. The Italian had to rally from a set down to claim a 2-6 6-1 7-6 7-6 win over his French opponent.
