Top seed Novak Djokovic continued his progression towards a fourth straight title as he defeated Tim van Rijthoven in four sets in their 2022 Wimbledon Round of 16 match. The Serbian was given a test of his tennis prowess and showed no signs of slowing down at 35 years old. He won the match 6-2 4-6 6-1 6-2 to progress to the quarterfinal of the tournament.
Jannik Sinner prevailed over Carlos Alcaraz Garfia in a match billed as the start of a new rivalry in men’s tennis. Sinner, 20, and Alcaraz, 19, went head-to-head in their Wimbledon Round of 16 clash. The 20-year-old Italian overcame his opponent in four sets to book a quarterfinal meeting with Djokovic. Sinner won the match 6-1 6-4 6-7 6-3 in three hours and 35 minutes.
Britain’s Cameron Norrie booked his place in the last eight of the competition after he picked up a straight sets win over Tommy Paul in their Round of 16 meeting. Norrie won the match 6-4 7-5 6-4 to prevail over his American opponent.
David Goffin defeated Frances Tiafoe in five sets to qualify for the quarterfinals of the 2022 Wimbledon tournament. The Belgian won the keenly-contested match 7-6 5-7 5-7 6-4 7-5 to make it past the last 16 of the tournament.
In the women’s draw, World number two Ons Jabeur continued her march towards a maiden Grand Slam title as she booked her place in the last eight following a hard-earned straight sets win over Elise Mertens in their Wimbledon Round of 16 encounter. The Tunisian won 7-6 6-4 and is yet to drop a set in the tournament.
Heather Watson saw her Wimbledon run end at the hands of Jule Niemeier in the Round of 16. World number 94 Niemeier booked her place in the last eight of the competition after a straight sets 6-2 6-4 win over Watson.
Tatjana Maria continued to take huge scalps as she followed up her victory over Maria Sakkari with another win over 12th seed Jelena Ostapenko. Maria recovered from losing the first set to win the match 5-7 7-5 7-5 and qualify for the quarterfinals.
Marie Bouzkova defeated Caroline Garcia in their Round of 16 clash at Wimbledon to book her place in the last eight of the competition. The Czech star won 7-5 6-2 in straight sets to qualify for the quarterfinals.
