2022 World Cup: Tunisia suffer slim 0-1 loss to Australia

Tunisia suffered a 0-1 loss to Australia in their second group game of the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar on Saturday afternoon.

Mitchell Duke glanced home a header to secure victory for the Australians In the 23rd minute of the match at the Al Janoub Stadium.

Australia came into the encounter without a point following their 1-4 loss to 2018 Champions France to sit bottom of Group D while Tunisia shared the spoils with Denmark in a goalless draw.

In the match, both teams shared early possession stats but with no real threat on goal until Duke struck in the 23rd minute.

Craig Goodwin provided a pass into the box from the left flank, which was deflected by the Tunsian defender. Duke showed good improvisation to adjust himself and then place a header into the right side of the net.

A neck-neck fight ensued afterwards but aside chances to Mathew Leckie for what would have doubled the Aussies lead and a Naim Slaiti blocked shot as Tunisia piled pressure for an equalizer, not much action was seen In the final third.

1-0 it ended in Favour of Australia, just Australia’s third ever win at the World Cup finals and their first since 2010.

It keeps the Socceroos alive going into the final group game against Denmark and heaps pressure on the Danes who face France later today.

For Tunisia, they must defeat France in the final group game to stand any chance of progressing from Group D, that represents a tall order but with the surprises at the ongoing World Cup, time will tell.
