2023/24 NPFL: Akwa, Bayelsa United survive, Sporting Lagos, Doma United relegated on the last-day

Sporting Lagos and Doma United have been relegated from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) following defeats on the final day of the season.

Sporting Lagos lost 1-0 to Shooting Stars in Ibadan, while Doma United’s 1-1 home draw with Abia Warriors sealed their fate.

Sporting Lagos ended the season in 17th place with 46 points from 38 matches, and Doma United finished 18th with 44 points.

Earlier in the season, Heartland FC and Gombe United were also relegated to the Nigeria National League (NNL).

On the other hand, Akwa United and Bayelsa United secured their spots in the top flight with final-day victories.

2021 Nigerian champions Akwa United triumphed over Rivers United with a 3-1 win, with Ubong Friday the star, scoring a brace, amidst strikes from Sani Suleiman (Akwa) and Nyima Nwagua (Rivers) at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.

In Benin City, Bayelsa United defeated Bendel Insurance 2-0 to secure their place in the NPFL for another season.

Enugu Rangers emerged victorious against Gombe United with a 2-1 win. The visitors showed resilience and tactical prowess, securing three crucial points on the road to add gloss to their title celebration.

Doma United and Abia Warriors shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw. Both teams fought hard for the win, but neither could find the decisive goal in a balanced encounter, marking the end of the road in the NPFL for Doma.

Remo Stars continued their strong form with a 2-1 victory over Katsina United. The home team capitalized on their chances, securing a well-deserved three points.

Niger Tornadoes secured a 2-1 win against Sunshine Stars in a closely contested match. The home side’s determination paid off as they edged out their opponents.

Kwara United put on a stellar performance with a dominant 4-0 victory over Heartland. The home team showcased their attacking capabilities, leaving no doubt about their superiority.

Kano Pillars clinched a dramatic 3-2 win against Lobi Stars. In an exciting and end-to-end game, Pillars managed to hold on to their lead, securing a thrilling victory for their fans.

Enyimba capped off their season with a solid 2-0 win over Plateau United. The home team controlled the match, displaying their quality and finishing the season on a positive note with a CAF Confederation cup spot.
