2023 US Open Day One: Swiatek, Gauff, Tsitsipas through to second round

Rune, Sakkari, Auger-Aliassime all crash out

Women’s World number one Iga Swiatek began her 2023 US Open campaign with a straight sets win over Swede star Rebecca Peterson. The Pole claimed a 6-0 6-1 win over her opponent to book her passage into the second round as she aims to retain the title she won last year.

Home favourite Coco Gauff overcame a resilient Laura Siegemund in three sets to progress beyond the first round of the 2023 US Open. The 19-year-old came back from a set down to defeat her German opponent 3-6 6-2 6-4 to reach the second round.

Caroline Wozniacki defeated Tatiana Prozorova in her first grand Slam match in nearly four years following her retirement in 2019. The Dane claimed a 6-3 6-2 win over her opponent, showing no signs of rust in her first major back.

Eighth seed Maria Sakkari became the first big-name casualty of the tournament when she lost to Rebeka Masarova in straight sets 6-4 6-4 to crash out of the competition at the first hurdle.

Fourth seed Elena Rybakina defeated Marta Kostyuk in straight sets 6-2 6-1 to reach the second round at Flushing Meadows.

Tenth seed Karolina Muchova defeated Storm Sanders in straight sets 6-4 6-0 to book her place in the second round of the 2023 US Open.

In the men’s draw, Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated former Grand Slam finalist Milos Raonic in straight sets to book his place in the second round of the tournament. The seventh seed claimed a comfortable 6-2 6-3 6-4 win to progress in the tournament.

Second seed Novak Djokovic eased past Alexandre Muller in straight sets to book his place in the second round in Flushing Meadows. The Serb claimed a 6-0 6-2 6-3 win over his unseeded French opponent.

Fourth seed Holger Rune suffered a shock first round exit at the hands of Roberto Carballes Baena in four sets to crash out of the tournament. The Dane lost 3-6 6-4 3-6 2-6 to give Baena a first win against a Top 10 player in his career.

Fifth seed Casper Ruud defeated unseeded American Emilio Nava in four sets to reach the second round of the 2023 US Open. Ruud claimed a 7-6 3-6 6-4 7-6 win to book his place in the next round of the tournament.

Canadian star Felix Auger-Aliassime crashed out of the tournament after losing in four sets to Mackenzie McDonald in the first round. McDonald defeated the 15th seed 7-6 4-6 6-1 6-4 to reach the second round.
