2023 US Open Day Three: Djokovic, Swiatek, Gauff progress as Ruud, Azarenka crash out
Wozniacki picks up another win, Tsitsipas sent packing
Second seed Novak Djokovic continued his progress in the 2023 US Open with a typically ruthless straight sets win over Bernabe Zapata Miralles in their second round meeting. The 23-time Grand Slam champion claimed a 6-4 6-1 6-1 win to book his passage into the third round of the competition.
Unseeded Swiss star Dominic Stricker recorded an upset as he sent Greek seventh seed Stefanos Tsitsipas crashing out of the US Open in a thrilling five-set clash. Striker had to dig deep to survive an impending defeat and came from a set down to defeat Tsitsipas 7-5 6-7 6-7 7-6 6-3 and reach the third round in Flushing Meadows.
Chinese star Zhang Zhizhen recorded one of the biggest upsets so far as he defeated fifth seed and last year’s finalist Casper Ruud in five sets in their 2023 US Open second round clash. The unseeded Chinese claimed a 6-4 5-7 6-2 0-6 6-2 win to stun the tennis world and send Ruud packing.
Tenth seed Frances Tiafoe eased past Austrian star Sebastian Ofner, defeating him in straight sets to reach the third round of the competition. The American claimed a 6-3 6-1 6-4 win to secure his passage into the next round.
Ninth seed Taylor Fritz defeated Juan Pablo Varillas in straight sets to qualify for the third round of the 2023 US Open. The American made light work of his Peruvian opponent with a 6-2 6-1 6-1 win.
In the women’s draw, world number one and defending champion Iga Swiatek secured a straight sets win over Daria Saville to reach the third round of the 2023 US Open. The 22-year-old Pole claimed a 6-3 6-4 win over her unseeded opponent.
Sixth seed Coco Gauff defeated Mirra Andreeva in straight sets in the battle of the teens to reach the third round. The 19-year-old American star claimed a 6-3 6-2 win over her 16-year-old opponent in the second round.
Unseeded American Taylor Townsend stunned Grand Slam semifinalist Beatriz Haddad Maia, defeating her in straight sets. Townsend secured a 7-6 7-5 win over the 19th seed to qualify for the third round.
Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki continued on her comeback trail as the downed 11th seed and former world number two Petra Kvitova in straight sets to reach the third round of the 2023 US Open. The Dane claimed a 7-5 7-6 win over her Czech opponent in their second round meeting.
Tenth seed Karolina Muchova booked her place in the third round with a straight sets win over Magdalena Frech. The Czech star won their meeting 6-3 6-3 to progress to the next round.
Chinese star Zhu Lin stunned 18th seed Victoria Azarenka with a 6-3 6-3 straight sets win to send Azarenka crashing out of the 2023 US Open.
