2023 US Open Day Two: Alcaraz, Sinner, Pegula progress as Williams loses
Murray, Medvedev, Jabeur all through to second round
Carlos Alcaraz began his defence of the US Open with a win over German star Dominik Koepfer. The world number one won the first set 6-3 and was 3-2 up in the second before his opponent retired through injury, confirming his place in the second round in Flushing Meadows.
Sixth seed Jannik Sinner defeated unseeded German Yannick Hanfmann in straight sets to book his passage into the second round of the 2023 US Open. The Italian star picked up a convincing 6-3 6-1 6-1 win to progress in the competition.
Andy Murray claimed a straight sets win over Frenchman Corentin Moutet to reach the second round of the 2023 US Open. The former Grand Slam champion claimed a 6-2 7-5 6-3 win to ease past his opponent in style.
Third seed Daniil Medvedev trounced Hungarian player Attila Balazs to qualify for the second round in Flushing Meadows. The Russian claimed a 6-1 6-1 6-0 win in his first round clash.
Eleventh seed Karen Khachanov suffered a shock exit at the hands of unseeded American Michael Mmoh, who has now qualified for the second round. Mmoh claimed a straight sets 6-2 6-4 6-2 to progress.
Alexander Zverev defeated Aleksandar Vukic in straight sets to reach the second round in Flushing Meadows. The 12th seed claimed a 6-4 6-4 6-4 win over his Australian opponent to progress in the competition.
In the women’s category, world number two Aryna Sabalenka claimed a comfortable win over Maryna Zanevska to reach the second round of the tournament. Sabalenka claimed a 6-3 6-2 win in the first round match.
Former winner Venus Williams was sent crashing out of the 2023 US Open by Greet Minnen, who claimed a 6-1 6-1 win in straight sets to reach the second round.
Lucia Bronzetti stunned 12th seed Barbora Krejcikova, defeating her in straight sets to qualify for the second round in Flushing Meadows. The Italian secured a 6-4 7-6 win to progress from the match.
Ons Jabeur defeated Camilla Osorio in straight sets to reach the second round of the 2023 US Open. The Tunisian fifth seed picked up a hard-earned 7-5 7-6 win to book her place in the next round.
Third seed Jessica Pegula claimed a straight sets win over Italian star Camila Giorgi to reach the second round in Flushing Meadows. The American won their meeting 6-2 6-2 to qualify for the next round.
Chinese star Wang Yafan stunned seventh seed Caroline Garcia in their first round meeting at the 2023 US Open, winning in straight sets. Wang claimed a 6-4 6-1 win over her French opponent to reach the second round.
