21-year-old eighth seed Jannik Sinner became the youngest player to reach the semifinals at Wimbledon since 2007 when he defeated Roman Safiullin in four sets at the 2023 Wimbledon Championship. The Italian star was in control throughout against his opponent, securing a 6-4 3-6 6-2 6-2 win over him to qualify for the semifinals for the first time in his career.
Sinner’s opponent in the last four will be world number two Novak Djokovic after the 23-time Grand Slam winner made light work of Russian seventh seed Andrey Rublev. The Serb came back from a set down to defeat Rublev in four sets 4-6 6-1 6-4 6-3 and book his place in the last four.
In the women’s draw, wildcard qualifier Elina Svitolina stunned world number one Iga Swiatek, defeating the Pole in three sets to reach the semifinals of the 2023 Wimbledon Championship. The Ukrainian claimed a 7-5 6-7 6-2 win to send the French Open champion crashing out of the tournament.
In the day’s other quarterfinal, fourth seed Jessica Pegula was at the receiving end of a shock defeat to Marketa Vondrousova at Wimbledon. The unseeded Czech star defeated her American opponent in three sets 6-4 2-6 6-4 to qualify for the semifinals of the competition. Vondrousova will face Svitolina for a place in the final of the competition.
