2025 AFCON gets major adjustment

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) have tentatively agreed for the AFCON 2025 to be held during the summer months.

When effected, this will represent a major adjustment to Africa’s grandest football competition.

According to reports by former France Football reporter, Hanif Ben Berkane, the tournament is likely to take place between mid-July and mid-August 2025.

This potential change in timing comes in response to long-standing concerns from European clubs about losing key African players during the AFCON, which traditionally takes place between January and February, disrupting the European season.

The last time the AFCON was held in the summer was during the 2019 edition in Egypt. The agreement between CAF and FIFA could alleviate some of the scheduling conflicts faced by European clubs.

Qualifiers for the AFCON 2025 are set to commence in March 2024 with preliminary round draws to be made today [Tuesday Feb. 20].

In the most recent AFCON edition, Côte d’Ivoire clinched their third title with a 2-1 victory over Nigeria in the final.
