2025 AFCON: Why Final Super Eagles Squad Announcement Has Been Delayed

The announcement of Nigeria’s final 28-man squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco has been delayed because of pressure from powerful groups.

A senior team official, who asked not to be named, told ScoreNigeria that some influential people are pushing for certain players to be included in the final squad.

“That is the only reason the list has not been released,” the official said.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has already approved a 28-man squad for the tournament, which begins on 21 December. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has given all teams until Thursday, 11 December, to submit their final lists.

Nigeria’s squad is now expected to be made public once internal discussions are settled.

The Super Eagles will play Tanzania on 23 December in their first group match. They will then face Tunisia on 27 December and finish the group stage against Uganda on 30 December 2025.
