McIlroy offers cheeky response to Love claim
Rory McIlroy has delivered a mischievous response to Davis Love III’s claims that the United States’ Ryder Cup team may be the strongest in history.
Earlier this week, US captain Love expressed faith in his side’s ability to end a run of three successive defeats in the biennial event, stating: “This is the best golf team, maybe, ever assembled.”
Asked about those comments on Saturday, McIlroy made a light-hearted reference to the panel – featuring the likes of Love, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Raymond Floyd – set up by the PGA of America following Europe’s convincing victory at Gleneagles two years ago.
“Definitely assembled the best task force ever, that’s for sure,” said a smiling McIlroy.
The Northern Irishman went on to acknowledge the threat the hosts will pose at Hazeltine next week.
“Look, it’s a great team. They have a lot of very talented players in there,” he added.
“They’re obviously quite confident. So you know what, it’s up to us to go there and try to upset the odds.”
The winner of the Deutsche Bank Championship this month, McIlroy could yet enter his fourth Ryder Cup as the FedEx Cup champion, having closed to within two strokes of leaders Dustin Johnson and Kevin Chappell ahead of the final round of the Tour Championship in Atlanta.
