Rohr confirms Mikel set to leave Chelsea for Marseille

John Obi Mikel is in advanced talks with Marseille and is set to leave Chelsea on a free transfer in January, according to Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr.

The 29-year-old has not played a single minute of competitive football under Antonio Conte and with The Blues on an 11-match winning streak in the Premier League, chances have been few and far between.

Conte’s lack of rotation has already caused Oscar to move on, with the Brazilian set for the Chinese Super League, and Mikel is set to follow suit.

But rather than getting a whopping fee for the Nigerian, as Chelsea will with Oscar, Mikel will be allowed to leave for nothing.

And it’s likely that Mikel will be moving to Ligue 1, according to Rohr.

The Super Eagles boss admitted Mikel sees Marseille as a ‘serious option’ and will be ‘allowed to leave for free’ and he told Europe 1: ‘I saw him in London.

‘He is in advanced discussions with Marseille.’

Mikel has been at Chelsea for 10 years and has won the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League and Europa League in a trophy-laden spell at Stamford Bridge.
