Klitschko invokes rematch clause against Fury

Wladimir Klitschko says he will take up the option of a rematch with Tyson Fury after losing his three heavyweight titles in Dusseldorf last weekend.

Klitschko’s unbeaten run – which lasted over a decade – came to an end in Germany as Fury shocked the Ukrainian to seal a unanimous points decision, taking his WBA Super, WBO and IBF world champion belts.

As part of the contract that brought the two heavyweights together, the 39-year-old had a rematch clause giving him the chance to regain his titles, and that is something he plans to do.

Four days after the 115-112, 115-112 and 116-111 defeat, Klitschko released a video message via his Instagram page confirming he intends to fight Fury again in 2016.

“I have a pre-Christmas gift for Tyson Fury and all boxing fans around the world,” he said. “I will be making use of my contractual option against Fury.

“So to say the fight of 2016 is in the making.”

On the rematch, Fury’s trainer and uncle Peter Fury told Sky Sports News: “We’re looking at possibly getting it in Wembley Stadium next year. We are looking, me and [Fury’s promoter] Mick Hennessy, to put the fight on in the UK, if we can.”
