57 goals In 22 matches: Chelsea set new goals per-game club-record
Chelsea have written a new chapter in their history books, reaching a club-record goals-per-game ratio of 2.6 after scoring 57 goals in 22 matches across all competitions this season. This remarkable feat was sealed in emphatic style during their 5-1 demolition of Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium.
The Blues, under the stewardship of Enzo Maresca, have emerged as one of the most potent attacking sides in Europe. The team entered the match with confidence following a victory over Aston Villa and showcased their squad depth by making seven changes to the starting lineup. Filip Jorgensen, Malo Gusto, Axel Disasi, Tosin Adarabioyo, Noni Madueke, Joao Felix, and Christopher Nkunku were all handed starts.
Southampton, featuring Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo but missing Paul Onuachu due to injury, struggled to keep pace with Chelsea’s dynamic attack. Axel Disasi opened the scoring with a powerful header from Enzo Fernandez’s corner. Though Southampton briefly levelled through Aribo, capitalising on a Kyle Walker-Peters assist, Chelsea soon regained control.
Noni Madueke played a pivotal role, intercepting a poor pass from Southampton goalkeeper Joe Lumley to set up Christopher Nkunku for a tap-in. Madueke then delivered a moment of individual brilliance, curling a spectacular shot into the far corner to give Chelsea a 3-1 lead before halftime.
Southampton’s hopes of a comeback faded when Jack Stephens was shown a red card early in the second half. Chelsea ruthlessly exploited their numerical advantage, with Cole Palmer and Jadon Sancho adding to the tally, ensuring a memorable night for the Blues.
The victory propelled Chelsea above Arsenal into second place in the Premier League, further cementing their status as serious title contenders.
SportsRation correspondent Nsikakabasi Akpan praised Chelsea’s incredible attacking form under Enzo Maresca, stating:
“Chelsea’s record-breaking goalscoring campaign is a testament to the tactical brilliance and attacking philosophy of Enzo Maresca. Averaging 2.6 goals per game is no small feat, and this team has the firepower to compete for the Premier League title. Stamford Bridge could be preparing for a historic season if this form continues.”
With their next fixtures offering opportunities to extend their scoring spree, Chelsea’s blistering attack has firmly placed them among the favourites for silverware this season.
