75 Referees For CHAN Tournament: Nigerian Referees Left Out

Even though Nigerian referees have been doing well in recent international and local matches, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) did not choose any of them for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN). The tournament will take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

CAF has named 75 officials who will help run the 2024 CHAN competition. This includes 26 referees, 26 assistant referees, 18 video match officials (VAR), and five instructors.

Morocco has the highest number of officials on the list, with seven people chosen. This means Morocco will have at least one person in every type of officiating role at the tournament. It’s the first time CHAN will be hosted by three countries.

Mohammed Guezzaz from Morocco will lead the team of instructors. Others in this group include Jammy Sikazwe from Zambia, Evarist Menkouande from Cameroon, Mohamed Hussein Ali from Djibouti, and Boubaker Hannachi.

Despite not entering a team for the tournament, Algeria still has a good number of officials selected. Five referees from Algeria made the list.

Other countries with strong representation include Cameroon and Uganda with four officials each, and South Africa with three.

In terms of regions, 20 officials come from North Africa and another 20 from West Africa.

CAF says the selection shows how refereeing across Africa is improving, with some of the best match officials from all over the continent taking part.
