Ademola Lookman sends message to South Africa with goal in Atalanta’s last game of 23/24 season

Nigeria will host South Africa this weekend in a 2026 World Cup qualification match. Ahead of the game, Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman scored in his club’s final game of the season on Sunday.

Ademola Lookman continued his impressive form, netting a goal in Atalanta’s final game of the Serie A season. Despite his efforts, Atalanta fell 3-2 to Fiorentina, failing to surpass Juventus in the league standings.

Sunday’s match at the Gewiss Stadium was initially scheduled for gameweek 29 but was postponed due to the illness and subsequent passing of Fiorentina director Joe Barone. With both teams progressing in European competitions, the fixture was rescheduled to the season’s end.

Atalanta fought hard but ultimately succumbed to Fiorentina in a thrilling encounter. Lookman brought his team level with his 11th goal of the season and assisted Giorgio Scalvini for another equalizer. However, Fiorentina’s Andrea Belotti scored the decisive goal before halftime.

Lookman ended the season with 11 goals in Serie A, 10 of which were scored at the Gewiss Stadium, making him the league’s top home scorer. His goals came against Cagliari, Genoa, Napoli, AC Milan, Lecce, Bologna, Empoli, Torino, and Fiorentina. His only away goal was also against Fiorentina.

With the Serie A season concluded, Lookman is expected to join the Nigerian national team for World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin.
