Kamaru Usman open to UFC title fight against new champion Belal Muhammad

Former UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman has expressed interest in fighting the newly crowned champion, Belal Muhammad, following Muhammad’s victory over Leon Edwards at UFC 304. Muhammad defeated Edwards via unanimous decision to claim the welterweight title, ending Edwards’ nearly two-year reign.

Usman, who previously lost his title to Edwards at UFC 278 and suffered two additional defeats, is keen on a potential bout with Muhammad. Despite recent setbacks, including a loss to Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 294 in a higher weight class, Usman remains a formidable contender in the welterweight division.

Speaking on the Pound 4 Pound Podcast, Usman hinted at his desire to fight for the title again. “You want the ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ Kamaru Usman? Give me ample time to get in there at the end of the year, or the top of next year. I’ll go in there, and I could take my welterweight strap back 100%,” Usman stated.

Muhammad, who recently won the welterweight belt, is expected to face a range of potential challengers for his first title defense. Contenders such as Shavkat Rakhmonov, Jack Della Maddalena, and Ian Machado Garry have been mentioned as possible opponents. Despite these emerging talents, Usman believes his past performances and championship pedigree warrant consideration for another title shot.

Usman’s impressive track record, including five successful title defenses before his recent defeats, underscores his ongoing relevance in the division. While some argue that undefeated Shavkat Rakhmonov or Jack Della Maddalena, who remains unbeaten in the UFC, might be more deserving, Usman’s former dominance and experience make him a strong candidate for a title fight.

As Usman prepares for his return, the prospect of a bout between him and Muhammad adds an exciting narrative to the welterweight division.
