Lee Carsley named Interim England manager after Southgate resignation

The Football Association (FA) has announced Lee Carsley as the interim manager for England’s national team, following Gareth Southgate’s resignation after the Euro 2024 tournament.

Carsley, who guided England’s under-21 team to victory in the 2023 European Championship, will now lead the senior team. His appointment comes as England prepares for the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League.

In a statement, the FA confirmed, “Lee Carsley has been appointed interim head coach of the England senior men’s team for the upcoming Nations League campaign.”

The 50-year-old Carsley, who has 40 caps for Ireland, brings valuable experience from his successful tenure with the youth teams. His leadership at the under-21 level was a significant achievement for the FA’s youth development.

Carsley steps in after Southgate decided to leave the role following England’s performance at Euro 2024. The FA is still planning the future of the senior team’s management.

Carsley said, “It’s an honour to step up and lead this England squad on an interim basis. My goal is to ensure continuity and help the team succeed in the UEFA Nations League while the FA searches for a new permanent manager.”

How Carsley performs during his interim period and whether he will be considered for the permanent role remains to be seen.
